President Cyril Ramaphosa has stated that he will soon be visiting Hammanskraal, located in the north of Pretoria, where a cholera outbreak has claimed the lives of 23 people so far. While the government is still struggling to find the source of the contaminated water, dozens have been hospitalized due to this deadly outbreak.
At Jubilee District Hospital, 75 patients are currently being treated with diarrhoeal diseases, with 15 being confirmed cholera cases. The Department of Health confirmed the increase in fatalities on Friday evening, despite 27 patients having been discharged after recovering from diarrhoeal disease and cholera.
Due to its inability to identify the source, the City of Tshwane Metro has been unsuccessful in containing the spread of the bacteria, making the outbreak a matter of great concern. In light of this, President Ramaphosa has pledged to visit the area soon, expressing his worries while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of an ANC National Working Committee meeting in North West over the weekend.
The President also expressed his satisfaction with how several ministries had been dealing with the outbreak, stating, “I have ministers whose job is to deal with the problem, and they are coming up with solutions. I am satisfied with the attention that they are giving.” The Public Works & Infrastructure, Human Settlements, Health, and Water & Sanitation departments are among those working together to resolve the disastrous outbreak in Hammanskraal.
