Residents of Anambra State have expressed mixed reactions over the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its enforcement by the Eastern Security Network (ESN), which paralysed commercial activities in the state.

While some residents complied with the order and remained indoors, others went about their businesses, resulting in a partial shutdown of commercial activities in some areas.

The sit-at-home order was issued in honour of the Biafra Day, which marks the anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Republic of Biafra by the late Odumegwu Ojukwu on May 30, 1967.

However, the order received criticisms from some quarters, with residents expressing concerns about its negative impact on their businesses and the economy of the state.

A trader in Onitsha, who identified herself as Chioma, lamented the poor sales recorded due to the sit-at-home order. She said, “I have not made any sales today. This is not good for our businesses. We need to find a better way to express our grievances without causing harm to ourselves.”

Similarly, a civil servant in Awka, who gave his name as Chibuzor, expressed his displeasure and frustration with the situation. “This sit-at-home is not necessary. It affects our economy, and the government needs to do something to address the situation,” he said.

On the other hand, some residents expressed their support for the order, citing the need for the restoration of Biafra as their reason.

Ngozi, a trader in Nnewi, said, “I support the sit-at-home order. We need to send a strong message to the government that we want Biafra. We cannot continue to live in Nigeria where our rights are not respected.”

Also, a young man in Onitsha, who gave his name as Nnamdi, said, “We must continue to observe the sit-at-home until our demands are met. We want Biafra, and we will not rest until we get it.”

It was gathered that security operatives were deployed to strategic locations in the state to ensure law and order during the sit-at-home.

In view of Facebook policy on suicide and self harm, it is important to note that while some situations like these may cause emotional distress to some individuals, it is important to take care of one’s emotional well-being and seek professional help when necessary.
