Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, Dissolves Local Council Caretaker Committees

The newly sworn-in Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, has dissolved the caretaker committees of all 16 local government areas in the state. This directive was given a few hours after he assumed office.

The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Yusuf Sanda, released a statement announcing the dissolution, which takes effect on May 29th, 2023. According to the statement, former caretaker committee chairmen have been instructed to surrender all government-owned property in their possession to the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA) of their respective councils immediately.

The dissolution of the caretaker committees comes as no surprise, as it is a common practice for newly elected governors to dissolve local government caretaker committees appointed by their predecessors. These committees are typically made up of individuals appointed by the former governor to administer local government affairs, pending the conduct of local government elections.

It is expected that Governor Agbu Kefas will swiftly appoint new caretaker committees in the coming days to oversee local government affairs within the state. This decision will enable him to have more control over his administration’s policies and programs’ implementation at the local level.

The dissolution of the caretaker committees provides an opportunity for the Governor to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to local government administration in Taraba State. By appointing competent individuals as caretaker committee members, Governor Kefas can ensure efficient and effective service delivery to the people of Taraba State.

It remains to be seen how the new caretaker committees will be constituted and who will make the cut. However, it is hoped that the Governor’s appointments will reflect the diversity of the state and the various interests of its people.

As Taraba State moves into a new political era, there is optimism that Governor Agbu Kefas’ administration will bring about the desired change in the state’s fortunes, particularly in local government administration.
