Kogi Assembly Holds Induction Course for Newly Elected Members

The Kogi State House of Assembly recently organized a one-day induction course for its newly elected 25 members at the chambers of the House. The event was held on Wednesday with the aim of welcoming new lawmakers to the legislative assembly and equipping them with the required knowledge for effective service delivery.

During the course, Hon Haruna Musa Idoko, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legislative Matters, highlighted the importance of peaceful co-existence among lawmakers. He advised the inductees to embrace unity despite their diverse political affiliations and work together for the common good of the state.

Toeing party lines during voting for the leadership of the House was also emphasized. Hon Musa explained that any deviation from this could lead to unrest in the state, and would not be beneficial to any of the lawmakers.

Alhaji Andas Abdulmalik Momohjimoh, the chairman of the Assembly Service Commission, also addressed the trainees. He urged them to be familiar with their aides, who would be representing them in public functions. He stressed the importance of choosing capable personnel who would be able to represent them well at all times.

In addition, the trainees were addressed on a number of topics geared towards enhancing leadership qualities. Martins Enimola, a retired Deputy Clerk, Administration and General Services, delivered a lecture on the principles and practice of emotional intelligence for leaders. He taught lawmakers how to manage their emotions while making decisions, as well as being conscious of their colleagues’ plights.

Lawal Lamidi, a consultant from Ultimate Consultants, spoke on financial management and budgeting tips for effective decision-making. He encouraged the lawmakers to prioritize their needs and engage in productive ventures.

Other topics that were covered include “Legislative Practice and Rule of Engagement” by Kogi State House of Assembly’s Deputy Clerk, Alfa Ndagi Ahmed, and “Lawmaking Functions of Legislators Under the Presidential System” by Bamidele Suru.

It is hoped that the knowledge and skills gained from the induction program will enhance the efforts of the newly elected members to deliver effective representation for the benefit of the people of Kogi State.
