Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers, dressed in military camouflage, invaded a farm in Awo village, Orile-Imo, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, killing two farm workers and abducting two others. Among the fatalities was So-Safe Corps Area Commander, Ogunrinde Saheed, who was shot dead while attempting to rescue the situation.

Over 200 workers were reportedly present during the incident, during which the kidnappers attempted to abduct many other workers but were resisted by the security operatives. Ogunrinde was part of the So-Safe Corps operation dispatched to save the situation, after a distress call was made to the Owode Area Command by the DPO of Owode division, reporting the kidnapping of two individuals and the killing of two others in Abule Awo, Orile-Imo on Tuesday.

The So-Safe commander narrated that they could not track the kidnappers on Tuesday and resumed the search the following morning, which led them to the Sagamu Interchange area. On sighting them, the kidnappers opened fire and hit Ogunrinde, who died at the scene. The group then took his rifle and phone before fleeing.

A suspect has been arrested, and the police are currently trailing the remaining suspects. Meanwhile, one of the shooting victims was taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, but was not attended to due to an ongoing strike. He later passed away while being taken to Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilisan.

The incident has once again brought to the forefront the failure of security operatives to tackle the issue of insecurity in Nigeria and protect citizens in rural communities from attacks. The government has been urged to intensify efforts towards tackling the systemic issue of insecurity in the nation.

It is important to note that the media should be careful while reporting incidents of kidnapping and avoid glorifying criminals or encouraging copycat behavior. Also, it is mandatory for Facebook to remove any post that violates its policy on suicide and self-harm.
