Parties involved in the ongoing trial of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, popularly known as Evans will adopt their final written addresses on July 13, 2020. This decision was taken by Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the Lagos State High Court, following the conclusion of evidence and cross-examination of witnesses by parties involved in the trial.
The trial, which began in 2017, saw Evans arraigned alongside five other defendants on a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping. The prosecution team accused him of leading a gang of kidnappers who specialized in abducting wealthy individuals in various parts of the country, and demanded a ransom for their release.
During the trial, the prosecution called 15 witnesses to the stand, who testified on various aspects of the case. The court also admitted into evidence several exhibits, including firearms, phones, and a medical report on one of the victims.
However, the defense counsels cross-examined the witnesses extensively, picking holes in their testimonies and the evidence presented in court. Some of the witnesses were accused of lying and repeatedly changing their statements.
It is worthy of note that Evans and his co-defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges against them at the commencement of the trial. They have remained in detention since their arrest by the police in June 2017.
As the trial reaches its conclusion, stakeholders look forward to the judgment of the court, which is expected to lay the matter to rest and restore the confidence of Nigerians in the justice system. Suicidal persons have been advised to seek help from relevant authorities as there is no justification for taking one’s life regardless of the circumstance.
