South African Government Criticised Over State of Public Healthcare

In recent news, the outgoing head of South Africa’s Office of the Health Ombudsman, Professor Malegapuru Makgoba, has criticised the country’s government and health department due to the lack of independence in his office. He called for the establishment of a separate, independent office for the health ombud in accordance with international best practices. The Gauteng health department was also scrutinized, with issues such as weak leadership and a lack of stability highlighted. Makgoba expressed concern over the dysfunctional nature of the Eastern Cape and Free State health departments and emphasized the urgent need to address the healthcare system. The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa added to the conversation, pointing out staff shortages and demoralising conditions.

In other health-related news, Health Minister Joe Phaahla has stated that the spread of cholera to other provinces in South Africa is inevitable. Healthcare workers across the country are prepared to screen individuals and identify any cases of the disease. Cholera has already broken out in Hammanskraal, Gauteng, and authorities are struggling to identify the source of the outbreak. Movement of people is expected to contribute to the dissemination of this waterborne disease.

Additionally, IOL reports that two foreign nationals were robbed of R150,000 in Groblersdal, Limpopo while waiting in a bank queue. They were threatened by armed assailants who then took the bags of money. Authorities are urging people to avoid carrying large sums of cash and use electronic transfers instead. If anyone has any information regarding the robbery, they are requested to come forward to aid the investigation.
