Football fans worldwide have been awash with mixed emotions ever since coach Christoph Galtier confirmed that Lionel Messi, the iconic Argentine footballer, would no longer be continuing with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after Saturday’s final Ligue 1 match of the season against Clermont Foot. The news of Messi’s departure has been making headlines for weeks, and Galtier’s announcement has only fueled more speculation.
PSG suspended Messi, who joined the team on a two-year deal, in early May for an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia, prompting murmurs that he would not return once his agreement expired. It is rumored that he has been heavily linked to Saudi club Al-Hilal, making Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Al-Nassr in January.
Galtier, who had the honor of coaching the “best player in football history,” expressed his wish that Messi would be given a good send-off as it is believed that PSG ultras had booed the forward on several previous occasions this season.
Although former club FC Barcelona has shown interest in his return, financial issues may prevent the Spanish champions from re-signing Messi. Miami-based MLS side Inter Miami, part-owned by David Beckham, has also been mentioned in some news reports as a possible destination.
Messi, who finally achieved his dream of winning the FIFA World Cup last year, wants to continue playing until at least the Copa America in June and July 2024 in the U.S. His goal ultimately is to retire at Newell’s Old Boys, his Argentinian birthplace of Rosario. But there has been little progress towards that end.
