In a bid to promote mental health and prevent suicide in Kwara State, a non-governmental organization known as New Horizons has embarked on a sensitization campaign. The organization seeks to create awareness about the dangers of suicide and the need to prioritize mental health.
Led by a team of mental health professionals, the New Horizons campaign has been organizing seminars and workshops across the state. The goal is to educate people on the warning signs of suicidal behavior and how to seek help when necessary.
According to a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO), Nigeria has one of the highest suicide rates in Africa. This is why campaigns like New Horizons are crucial in addressing the issue of suicide and promoting mental health.
Speaking with journalists during one of the workshops, the Director of New Horizons, Dr. Adewale Ajiboye, emphasized the need for everyone to take mental health seriously. He urged people to seek professional help when they face challenges, rather than resorting to suicide.
Dr. Ajiboye explained that mental health challenges are common and affect people from all walks of life. He encouraged Nigerians not to stigmatize mental health disorders but to create a supportive and understanding environment for people who are struggling.
As part of their campaign, New Horizons has also set up a helpline – 08033857777 – for people to reach out for support and counseling. The helpline is open 24/7 and is run by trained mental health experts.
It is commendable to see organizations like New Horizons taking the initiative to address the issue of suicide and promote mental health in Nigeria. With more efforts like this, we can create a society where everyone’s mental health is prioritized and supported.
