The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly interrogated the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, over allegations of money laundering amounting to N4bn.
According to sources close to the anti-graft agency, Fayemi was invited for questioning and spent several hours at the Abuja office of the EFCC on Thursday. The allegations relate to the misuse of funds during his first stint as Governor of Ekiti State between 2010 and 2014.
The EFCC is said to be investigating several top government officials from the previous administration, and Fayemi’s case is believed to be part of that ongoing probe. It is reported that several properties and accounts linked to the governor have also been frozen.
In a statement released by his media aide, Yinka Oyebode, Fayemi confirmed that he was indeed questioned by the EFCC and provided answers to all the questions asked of him. He also stated that he had cooperated fully with the anti-graft agency and would continue to do so until his name is cleared of the allegations.
This development comes just a few months before the governorship election in Ekiti State, where Fayemi is expected to run for a second term. The opposition party has already seized on the issue, calling for Fayemi’s resignation pending the conclusion of the EFCC’s investigation.
It remains to be seen how this will affect his chances at the polls, but this latest development is sure to have significant implications for Ekiti’s political landscape.
