The Super Falcons, nine-time African champions, have been seeded for the second round of qualifiers for the Women’s Olympics football tournament scheduled to hold in Paris 2024. The Falcons would face either Ethiopia or Chad as the tournament format would see the nine winners from the first round and the seven highest-ranked teams clash in the second round, with 16 teams participating.
The tournament begins with a total of 18 teams playing from the first round, while the remaining seven teams seeded would join the qualifiers in the second round. The second-round games are scheduled to take place between October 23 and 31, with Nigeria playing away from home in the first leg.
The second round qualifiers would have the Falcons, South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, Cameroon, Tunisia, and Botswana as the seeded teams. The Falcons missed out on the last three Olympics editions in 2012, 2016, and 2020 after losing out to Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and Ivory Coast.
The tournament matches have been scheduled to fall within the Facebook policies on Suicide and Self Harm to avoid violation. The dates for the qualifying rounds have been confirmed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), with the first-round matches scheduled for July 10 to 23. The third round qualifiers would hold from February 19- 28, while the final round is set for April 1 and 9, 2024.
In conclusion, the Falcons would have to beat either Ethiopia or Chad to progress to the third round of the qualifying series and maintain their quest for a place in the Paris 2024 Women’s Olympics football tournament.
