President Bola Tinubu met with the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, on Thursday in Abuja to discuss the leadership succession for the 10th National Assembly. This comes on the heels of the 2019 general elections that saw the All Progressives Congress party emerge victorious and retain the majority in both houses of the legislature.
According to Lawan, Tinubu emphasised the importance of selecting the right leadership for the National Assembly; one that would serve the interests of the nation, the legislature and promote peaceful relationships between the Legislature and Executive arms of government. Furthermore, he gave advice on how a new leadership for the National Assembly should emerge to ensure stability and productivity.
In his remarks, Lawan expressed appreciation for the discussion with the APC leader, stating that the resolution of all outstanding issues was their priority. He also stressed that while he has no interest in vying for the position of President of the Senate for the 10th National Assembly, he is committed to mentoring new lawmakers.
It remains to be seen how the leadership selection will unfold as it is likely to be a complex and sensitive process. However, with the guidance of political leaders such as Tinubu, the nation can look forward to a productive, unified and effective governing process over the next four years.
