The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) has announced the suspension of its indefinite strike for four weeks.
The NUAHP has called on the Lagos State Government to fulfil its obligations under all existing agreements to end the strike action permanently.
Acting Chairman of the NUAHP in Lagos State, Mr Sode Adegbenro, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday.
The NUAHP represents a cross-section of health workers employed by Lagos State Public Service in the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, all General Hospitals, and Primary Health Centres (PHCs).
Adegbenro explained that the strike was suspended for four weeks to enable the state government to fulfil all seven demands made by the union.
He was careful to add that the strike would resume if the state government failed to follow through with the implementation of the agreements.
“On May 25, we held a meeting with representatives of the government at the state Ministry of Establishment. Both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
“The union held a congress on May 26 to review the meeting’s outcome and the agreements signed with the government.
“We decided to show compassion towards the patients who require treatment at various health facilities. Based on the prevailing economic situation in the country, we agreed to suspend the strike for four weeks.
“This would help to reduce the stress being experienced and enable the government to actualise the agreements within the specified timeframe,” Adegbenro explained.
The strike was suspended on Monday. All union members have returned to their duty posts.
