Fayemi Denies Allegations of N4bn Fraud During EFCC Visit

The former Governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has denied allegations that he is currently being probed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N4bn fraud.

In a statement released on Friday by the Head of the Fayemi Media Office, Abuja, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, Fayemi stated that when he visited the EFCC, “no such allegation was raised” during his conversation with officials of the anti-graft agency.

However, the statement noted that during his conversation with the EFCC officials in Ilorin, Kwara State, Fayemi responded to a frivolous petition from a group that was allegedly trying to tarnish his reputation.

The statement revealed that Dr. Fayemi had received an invitation from the Ilorin office of the EFCC last month regarding a money laundering petition against him. However, he was already committed to different activities and programmes in preparation for the change of government, as a key member of the APC, and informed the EFCC of his willingness to cooperate but requested a more suitable date for his appearance.

On Thursday, Fayemi accompanied by his counsel, visited the EFCC office in Ilorin, engaged in fruitful discussions with the investigators and eventually departed after a few hours.

The statement affirmed that Fayemi’s visit has provided answers to the agency’s inquiries regarding the petition, and clarified that throughout his tenure as governor, Fayemi served the people of Ekiti State with utmost dedication and remained renowned for his principled leadership.
