International Efforts to Mediate an End to War in Sudan Continues

Nairobi and Djibouti continue to aid conflict resolution in Sudan. Kenya’s President, William Ruto, affirmed his country’s commitment to engaging the warring parties in Sudan. Ruto met Yousif Izzat, the envoy of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander, on Friday and expressed readiness to support all the parties to achieve lasting peace. President Ruto is a key member of the mediation bloc of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), along with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir and Djibouti’s President, Ismail Guelleh. US envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mike Hammer, also met with the Executive Secretary of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu, in Djibouti on Thursday, to discuss collective international action to end the fighting in Sudan. The US has recently imposed visa restrictions on specific individuals in Sudan responsible for undermining Sudan’s democratic transition and sanctions have been placed on companies contributing to the conflict.

Sources also indicated that the Summit of the IGAD region would take place on June 12, in Djibouti, and that “the war in Sudan is set to top the agenda, and it is very likely that the IGAD mediation bloc will meet on the same date.” Earlier in May, Malik Agar, Deputy Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, said that Sudan needs a serious peace process with African partners under the umbrella of the IGAD presidential mechanism. Countries and international organisations continue to make efforts towards achieving lasting peace in Sudan.
