Resident Doctors Stand Firm on 200% Salary Increase Demand

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has reiterated their demand for a minimum increase of 200 per cent in the CONMESS salary structure. In addition, they called on all associated allowances mentioned in their letter to the government on July 7, 2022, to be implemented.

In a communique issued at the end of their scientific conference held in Lagos on Saturday, NARD President, Dr Emeka Orji, emphasized the demand for a substantial salary increase. However, the group has agreed to give the new government the necessary time to resolve this issue, which is the root cause of the current increase in “brain drain” in the sector.

Moreover, the group called on specific state governments, including Governors Adedapo Abiodun of Ogun state, Alex Otti of Abia state, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers state, Seyi Makinde of Oyo state, Abdurahman Abdulrasaq of Kwara state and the FCTA Administration, to revive the health sector in their respective states. The group also urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the Nigerian health sector, as paying lip service to the problem of “brain drain” is no longer acceptable.

Furthermore, NARD called on West African Colleges of Surgeons and Physicians to discontinue the practice of charging its members using parallel market exchange rates. The group also requested that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria stop downgrading membership certificates, a practice that is not observed in sister African countries sharing the same certificate.

With regards to bench fees, the group called on the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and Lagos State Governor to stop demanding bench fees, as the National Council on Establishment has abolished the fees.

On the subsidy issue, NARD suggested that the money saved from subsidy should be used in investments that better the lives of Nigerians.

NARD has made it clear that they will continue to fight for a salary increase and better conditions for doctors across the country until the government meets their demands.
