The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Olusade Adesola, has revealed plans to develop bicycle tracks within the Abuja metropolis. Speaking at the opening of the 2023 World Bicycle Day celebration, Mr Adesola stated that bicycle tracks were already included in the Abuja city master plan and it was time to execute the plan.
“We need to develop them. This move will deepen the campaign to reduce the effect of climate change; emissions will be reduced if cycling is encouraged,” he said. The Permanent Secretary underscored the importance of cycling as a sport and a physical activity that can boost the health of individuals. He urged people to imbibe the culture of riding bicycles, saying that the benefits of cycling are enormous, including improving heart health and strengthening the limbs.
The Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Shri Balasubramanian, also encouraged Nigerians to embrace cycling in the interest of good health, a healthier environment, and a better way to enjoy the city. He further commended the Indian High Commission in Nigeria for its consistent support toward the celebration of World Bicycle Day in the FCT.
The theme of the event was “Cycling – A Better Way to Enjoy the City.” With this development, the FCTA has demonstrated its commitment to promoting environmentally friendly policies and encouraging physical activity for the well-being of individuals. The development of bicycle tracks in Abuja will not only promote exercise, but it will also serve as an effective mode of transportation in the city.
This new development will be a game-changer in the transportation system within and around the city. It will encourage more people to use bicycles as a means of transportation, which, in turn, will reduce traffic congestion, promote a healthy lifestyle, and reduce carbon emissions. The FCTA needs to be commended for its foresight in planning and executing this program to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more active city.
