Around 37 people have reportedly lost their lives and many others are injured following an attack on three communities in the Tangaza local government area of Sokoto state. These attacks were carried out allegedly because the communities refused to pay the ‘levies’ imposed by the terrorists.
The terrorists did not stop at this and went even further to disperse sympathisers who came to perform burial rites for the deceased in one of the communities. The communities attacked are Raka, Raka Dutse and Filin Gawa.
The bandits, according to witnesses, carried out this atrocious act on Saturday evening. Bashar Kalenjeni, the immediate past chairman of the area, said that 18 people were killed at Raka, 17 at Filin Gawa, and two at Raka Dutse. Mr Kalenjeni further narrated how the bandits returned and scattered the burial ceremony on the night of the attack.
“The bandits imposed levies on their communities, which was meant to take charge with immediate effect, and also dictating to residents on what to and not to do. But the villagers refused to succumb and because of that they attacked them, killing 37 persons while several others sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment at General Hospital, Gwadabawa. There are others who are still unaccounted for,” he added.
Mr Kalenjeni said that the “offence” of the villagers was their refusal to pay the levies imposed on their communities. He also disclosed how the deceased are still unburied as the bandits continue to roam the area.
When contacted, the spokesman of the Sokoto State Police Command, Ahmad Rufa’i, said that he was not aware of the attacks.
Despite increasing efforts by the government and military personnel to curb these attacks, the bandit raiders remain undeterred, and have been continually unleashing their terror on innocent victims in the northern parts of Nigeria.
The government and security agencies must find a workable solution to this security threat and prevent the incessant loss of innocent lives.
