The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has disclosed its plans to introduce bicycle lanes across Abuja, the nation’s capital. This initiative is aimed at improving the safety of road users while promoting a healthy lifestyle among residents.

According to the Permanent Secretary of the FCTA, Mr Olusade Adesola, who made this known on Monday during a cycling event to mark the 2021 World Bicycle Day in Abuja, the Abuja administration is set to develop bicycle lanes in the city to promote healthy living as well as to improve the safety of cyclists.

He further stated that the goal of this initiative is to encourage the use of bicycles as a means of transportation, especially for short trips within the city. This would not only reduce the risk of accidents and traffic congestion but also minimize air pollution, which has become a major challenge in the city.

Mr Adesola also emphasized that the FCTA would collaborate with relevant agencies to provide bicycles at affordable rates to residents who want to adopt cycling as a mode of transportation.

The FCTA’s bicycle lane project aligns with global trends aimed at introducing environmentally friendly modes of transportation in cities, especially with the increasing risks of climate change. The development of cycling infrastructure is a significant step towards achieving a sustainable and healthy city in Abuja.

In conclusion, the FCTA’s decision to introduce bicycle lanes in Abuja is a welcome development and underscores the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable transportation in the country. It is hoped that other states in Nigeria will take a cue from this initiative and introduce similar projects in their respective cities.
