Former Presidential Aide, Reno Omokri has come to the defence of the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. In a post on his Facebook page, Omokri urged Nigerians to think twice before criticizing Emefiele, stating that he is the only Nigerian who has held the position as CBN Governor for two tenures in the last 30 years.
Omokri, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), feels that Emefiele deserves the privilege of defending himself and should be charged to court if there is a case against him.
He pointed out that Emefiele’s case is unique because he was appointed by one President from one political party and reappointed by another from a different party. Therefore, condemning him without evidence and subjecting him to a media trial by a mob will not get to the bottom of the issue.
Omokri emphasized that Emefiele held an office that was the most sought-after non-elective position in Nigeria, and although there are numerous accusations against him, no evidence has been provided yet.
In conclusion, Omokri advised the Tinubu administration, who suspended Emefiele and currently have him in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), to charge him to court and give him the chance to defend himself judicially and in the media.
It is important to note that Emefiele has been the CBN Governor since June 3, 2014. He was reappointed in 2019 by President Muhammadu Buhari for another term of five years.
