Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State emphasized that democracy does not only entail conducting successful elections or having a functional government, but also involves prioritizing citizens’ safety and welfare.
Mutfwang’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, spoke on behalf of the governor in commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
The governor congratulated the people of Plateau State on the occasion and urged them to uphold democratic values such as tolerance, respect for human rights, and the rule of law.
In the governor’s words, “Democracy is the best form of government that focuses on improving the well-being of citizens and vested in the people the power of recruiting their leaders.”
Mutfwang reminded residents of the need to uphold the principles of democracy, which include the rule of law, respect for human rights, and citizens’ participation in decision-making processes.
The Governor also recalled that the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election was a dark moment in the history of Nigeria and called for the protection of democratic tenets and the will of the people.
He urged citizens to continue striving towards making the society a fair, just, and inclusive one, where every citizen has a voice and a stake in the future.
Furthermore, he called on the people to reflect and be grateful to God for the gift of life. “We must resolve to live together in the interest of peace, unity, and progress of our beloved state,” he stated.
