In the spirit of national unity and religious harmony, chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Yekini Nabena, has declared that the South-South region deserves to produce the next Senate President for the 10th Assembly. Nabena pointed out that it would not be fair for the North to have a Vice-President, Speaker, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, and the Senate President.
Despite the announcement of former minister Godswill Akpabio as the preferred candidate by the ruling APC, Abdul Aziz Yari and Uzor Kalu continue to maintain their ambitions.
Mr Nabena, therefore, appealed to Northern senators-elect to forgive Godswill Akpabio, a top contender for the Senate Presidency if he has committed any offence against the region. He made an appeal to all senators-elect to rally around Akpabio to emerge as the next President.
According to Nabena, “There is a need for religious balancing in government and for the fact that only South-South will be left out of the equation if the position of Senate President eludes the region, hence the more reason senators-elect should rally support for Senator Godswill Akpabio as the next Senate President.”
He urged people to forgive Akpabio if he had done anything wrong in the past for the sake of national unity and religious harmony. Nabena reminded everyone that the south-west had produced the president, the north-east had the vice-president, the north-west was set to produce the speaker (note that the three of them are Muslims), the north-central had the SGF, and the south-east had produced the deputy speaker, leaving out the south-south region.
