Expert Advises on the Importance of Regular Exercise in Preventing Cardiovascular Diabetes

Dr Felix Archibong, the Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association’s Cross River branch, has emphasized the importance of exercise in preventing heart diseases, hypertension, and obesity. Speaking at the annual June 12 exercise organized by the City Walker Group in Calabar, Archibong urged Nigerians to take advantage of preventive measures towards their health.

The theme of this year’s event was “Fat and Fit”, focusing on maintaining a healthy weight. Archibong, in his speech, lamented the rising cases of heart-related diseases, hypertension, and other health-related issues. He stressed that the benefits of regular exercise could not be overstated.

Archibong further added that “exercise comes with lots of health benefits, and it is being used to prevent diseases such as cardiovascular (heart), hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.” He also explained that exercise helped to burn excesses from junk food, which can be harmful to the body.

However, Dr Archibong warned that while exercise is essential for good health, it must be carried out according to specifications to avoid sudden death. “Exercise has specifications. It has to be human-specific and should be prescribed,” he said.

In conclusion, the chairman of the NMA Cross River branch urged Nigerians to prioritize their health and take proactive measures towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The City Walker group leader, Mr. Lloyd Ndoma, said the exercise was the group’s way of promoting healthy living among the people and revealed that plans had been concluded to take the annual event beyond Calabar to other Local Government Areas in Cross River.

It’s crucial to note that regular exercise comes with many health benefits and it should be a daily routine. Nigerians should be encouraged to take out time and engage in physical activities regularly to prevent diseases such as hypertension, heart diseases as well as obesity.
