Regular exercise prevents cardiovascular diabetes – Expert

The Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association, Cross River branch, Dr Felix Archibong, said that regular exercise could help prevent cardiovascular diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

Archibong stated this in Calabar on Monday at the annual June 12 exercise organised by City Walker Group.

The theme of the 2023 event was “Fat and Fit”.

The Cross River NMA chairman urged Nigerians to take advantage of preventive measures for their health.

Lamenting the rising cases of heart-related diseases, hypertension, among others, Archibong said the health benefits of regular exercise could not be overemphasised.

According to him, exercise comes with lots of health benefits, it’s being used to prevent diseases such as cardiovascular (heart), hypertension, diabetes and obesity.

“As you are doing exercise, your organs in the body are being checked.

“We eat junk food, and all sorts of drinks which are not good for our system, it is good to burn the excesses through exercise.

Archibong, however, advised that exercise must be carried out according to specification, to avoid sudden death.

“Exercise has specifications. It has to be human-specific and should be prescribed,” he said.

On his part, the leader of the City Walker, Mr. Lloyd Ndoma, said the event was the group’s own way of promoting healthy living of the people.

He said that plans had been concluded to take the yearly event beyond the capital City to other local government areas of Cross River.
