New information has emerged regarding the whereabouts of over 80 members of a Ugandan doomsday cult, who disappeared recently. They had been misled by their pastor, who informed them that they could only be saved from the apocalypse by meeting Jesus Christ in Ethiopia. Speaking to the press, the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ spokesperson, Simon Mundeyi, stated that Ethiopian authorities had detained and returned the group to Uganda.
The cult members, who were allegedly convinced to sell all their possessions by pastor Peter Simon Opolot of the Christ’s Disciple Church, were asked to fast for 40 days that would culminate in Jesus meeting them in Ethiopia at the end of the fasting period. The pastor convinced them that as Uganda was not one of the countries that Jesus would select Christians from, they had to make their way to the promised land – Ethiopia.
The internal affairs ministry reported that some of the people duped were professionals, including teachers, civil servants, and elites, among others. After reaching the destination, Ethiopian authorities were alarmed as most of the group members were frail. The members were arrested and later returned to Uganda.
Currently, the fugitive pastor is still at large, and efforts by the authorities to apprehend him are ongoing. The recent discovery of mass graves in eastern Kenya containing over 100 bodies allegedly linked to a cult promoting starvation for salvation has further highlighted the dangers of cults in the region. The Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasized the importance of the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to similar groups.
