The Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) has established a new IHVN Campus in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, to advance research, development, and provision of quality health care services in the country.

The Chief Executive Director of IHVN, Dr. Patrick Dakum, revealed that the modern facility would not only promote public health education and research but also ensure unbiased access to top-notch medical care based on innovation and evidence-based medical services.

Among the world-class amenities provided by the campus are a biorepository unit built with liquid nitrogen facilities, a genomics resource center, microbiology, clinical pathology, molecular diagnostics, haematology, and chemistry laboratories. The Clinical Trials Unit would be a testing ground for drugs and vaccines among the local population.

According to Dakum, the Programme Implementation Centre would facilitate public health initiatives and grants through funding from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USAID, the World Bank, and the Global Fund, among other donors. The projects will provide life-saving integrated services for various areas such as HIV and tuberculosis prevention and care, treatment and nutrition services, in over twenty states in the nation.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of IHVN, Professor Emeritus Umaru Shehu, expressed his optimism that the campus’s establishment underscores Nigeria’s readiness to combat emerging diseases, thereby making the nation ‘s healthcare a destination for medical tourism, clinical diagnostics, treatment, and care for patients suffering from infectious and non-infectious diseases.

Shehu added that enhancing healthcare quality calls for collective effort from the government, various communities, and international partners. He remarked that since he had actively witnessed the nation’s effort to curb epidemics like Smallpox, Ebola, HIV, Polio, and COVID-19, the IHVN’s latest intervention is another significant contribution to Nigeria’s healthcare development.

In summation, the IHVN public health campus would help researchers and health care workers improve their research efforts and initiatives that would promote public health services’ quality and equity within Nigeria and beyond.
