The governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has expressed his administration’s commitment to transforming farmers in the state into employers of labour. Through targeted support in the form of loans and the provision of modern farm equipment, the governor aims to enhance the productivity of farmers and boost their yields.
During the flag-off of the 2023 farming season in Awka, the state capital, the governor, represented by his deputy, Dr Onyeka Ibezim, addressed farmers and emphasized the importance of empowering them. The event also witnessed the presentation of agricultural enhancement equipment worth an estimated N21 million.
The equipment, made possible by the Adani-Omor Zonal Staple Crops Processing Implementation Unit of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Programme Phase-One (ATASP-1), is expected to have a significant impact on the farming activities of beneficiaries. The deputy governor stated, “I have confidence that the equipment presented to you today will turn the beneficiaries into employers of labour and major contributors to the food supply in the state and the country at large.”
The primary goal of this empowerment initiative is to enhance food production and ensure food security in Anambra State. By equipping farmers with modern tools, the government aims to increase their efficiency and enable them to expand their operations.
Five farmers’ cooperative groups from various communities in the state have been selected as beneficiaries of the equipment. Among the items provided are a mobile thresher, rubber mill, rice destoner, dryer machines, handheld planter, cassava grater, knapsack sprayer, and hammer mill.
Dr Forster Ihejiofor, the Commissioner for Agriculture, revealed that the equipment was procured with loans from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and would be repaid over time by the federal and state governments. This financing arrangement ensures that the burden of payment is shared and does not place an undue financial strain on the farmers themselves.
Under the ATASP-1 Adani-Omor Zonal Programme, the selection of the thirteen beneficiary farmer groups was based on a thorough needs assessment. This approach aims to ensure that the equipment aligns with the specific requirements of each group, maximizing their potential for success.
The initiative spearheaded by Governor Soludo is a testament to his administration’s commitment to agricultural development and job creation in Anambra State. By empowering farmers with the necessary resources, not only will they be able to improve their livelihoods, but they will also play a pivotal role in boosting the agricultural sector and securing the state’s food supply.
