EPL: Guardiola Urges Gundogan to Remain at Manchester City Amid Barcelona Interest

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has expressed his desire to retain the services of midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, even as Barcelona shows interest in the Germany international.

Gundogan’s current contract with Manchester City is set to expire on June 30, making him a free agent if no extension agreement is reached.

Barcelona, in their pursuit to find a top-quality midfielder to replace Sergio Busquets this summer, have been linked to Gundogan.

However, Guardiola remains firm in his stance that Gundogan should continue his career at Manchester City, disregarding Barcelona’s advances.

“I’m aware that Barcelona has expressed their interest in signing Gundogan. Nonetheless, we are equally keen on retaining him at the Etihad. I hope he chooses to stay,” Guardiola stated.

Guardiola further acknowledged the exceptional talent Gundogan possesses, stating, “If Barcelona succeeds in securing his signature, they will acquire an exceptional, world-class player.”

Gundogan, who joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 for €27 million, has showcased his versatility and contributed significantly to the team’s success under Guardiola. With 60 goals and 40 assists in 304 appearances, Gundogan’s impact cannot be undermined.

Last season, Gundogan played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s historic treble, where they clinched the FA Cup, Premier League, and UEFA Champions League trophies.
