The Federal government and the Enugu State government have announced plans to collaborate and complete the international wing of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, as well as construct a cargo terminal. These initiatives aim to enhance the state’s economy, boost tourism potential, and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Kabir Yusuf Mohammed, alongside Governor Peter Mbah, disclosed this information after inspecting the ongoing construction of the international terminal building and the proposed site for the cargo terminal at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu state.
During a media briefing, Mr. Mohammed praised Governor Mbah’s determination and sense of urgency towards the realization and operation of these two terminals. He emphasized that the present moment was perfect for discussing partnership and collaboration.
Mr. Mohammed stated, “Enugu, as the capital of the South-Eastern region, is a major trading hub with traders engaging in various global transactions. Therefore, establishing a cargo terminal here will significantly boost the economy of not only the South-East Zone but also the entire nation.”
Meanwhile, Governor Peter Mbah highlighted the crucial role of the cargo terminal and the operationalization of the international terminal in achieving Enugu’s goal of becoming a $30 billion economy. He regarded these projects as catalysts for attracting investments and driving economic activities in the state.
“The cargo terminal is critical for our transition from agriculture to agro-allied industrialization. It will facilitate the export of agricultural and agro-allied produce from Enugu state and promote economic diversification,” Governor Mbah explained.
Discussing the completion of the international terminal, Governor Mbah emphasized the potential for tourism development in the state. He pointed out that attracting over three million visitors annually would require an operational international airport terminal to accommodate flights from different parts of the world.
Regarding funding challenges, Governor Mbah assured that both FAAN and the state government would explore various financing models to ensure the successful implementation of the project. He expressed confidence in the bankability and revenue-generating potential of these projects.
Governor Mbah concluded, “We have had fruitful discussions with the FAAN team on setting a timeline for the speedy completion of both projects. We are committed to transforming our words into action and ensuring the immediate operationalization of these terminals.”
The collaboration between the Federal government and the Enugu State government signifies a significant step towards infrastructure development and economic growth in the region. The completion of the cargo and international airport terminals will not only facilitate trade but also elevate Enugu’s status as a key economic and tourism destination in Nigeria.
