The Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources, Geoffrey R. Pyatt, has praised Nigeria and the U.S. for their collaborative efforts in developing the energy sector. He has pledged to seek stronger alliances to meet the increasing demands for energy and address concerns regarding greenhouse gas emissions.

During a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Ambassador Aduda, in Abuja, Pyatt expressed his satisfaction with the joint work done by the Bureau of Energy Resources and NNPC Limited in the area of carbon management.

“I am very proud of the work that the Bureau of Energy Resources has done jointly with NNPC Limited specifically in the area of carbon management,” he said.

In a statement on Twitter, Pyatt also stated, “Productive meeting with National Petroleum Corporation @nnpclimited and Ministry of Petroleum Resources @FMPRng on decarbonizing Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.”

He further emphasized the significance of Nigeria as an important partner for global energy security and expressed his commitment to collaborating with the country to meet the growing demand for energy while eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from energy production.

The discussions during the meetings focused on renewing collaboration on energy transition, utilizing gas for cleaner energy sources, and establishing the US-Nigeria Strategic Energy Dialogue, as reported by the Nigerian Ministry of Petroleum.

Earlier today, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Ambassador @AdudaG received a delegation from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources (@EnergyAtState), led by the Assistant Secretary, Geoffrey R. Pyatt, at the #NNPCTowers, the ministry noted on Twitter.

The event was attended by the GCEO of NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, along with heads of parastatals and agencies in the energy sector, including the Chief Executive of NUPRC, Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, and the Chief Executive of NMDPRA, Mr. Farouk Ahmed, among others.

During his visit to Nigeria from June 18-20, Mr. Pyatt will also participate in a panel discussion involving both private and public sector organizations. The panel will explore ways to expedite the development of Nigeria’s power sector, including through initiatives like the Clean Energy Demand Initiative (CEDI). CEDI is a mechanism aimed at encouraging corporate investment in clean energy to support economic growth, as stated by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources.

Through this partnership, Nigeria and the U.S. are taking significant steps towards achieving sustainable and cleaner energy sources while addressing the challenges of growing energy demands and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
