The Nigerian Government is looking to enhance bilateral relations with the British Government, particularly in the areas of security, agriculture, and infrastructure development. Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, made this known during a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, in Abuja.
Akume highlighted the longstanding colonial relationship between the UK and Nigeria and emphasized the need for both countries to work together for their mutual benefit. He stated, “We want to make a difference in the lives of our people. We are not after money, we are after infrastructure, we are after food security, and we are after energy. We believe with your support we should go further than this.”
Delighted to have hosted a high-powered delegation from the UK High Commission today! Productive discussions focused on strengthening Nigeria-UK ties and exploring areas of cooperation. Exciting opportunities ahead in trade, investment, education, and cultural exchange.

Expressing his congratulations to the British High Commissioner on his new posting, Akume urged the British Government to assist in curbing Boko Haram insurgency, banditry, and clashes between farmers and herders, just as they did during Nigeria’s civil war. He also emphasized the need to deepen the bilateral relationship to support Nigeria in education and health sectors.
In his remarks, British High Commissioner Richard Montgomery commended the SGF on his appointment and lauded the present administration for implementing bold reforms to reposition the economy and ensure sustainable growth. He stated that their visit aimed to familiarize themselves with the key priorities of the Nigerian government to tailor their support accordingly.
Montgomery assured that the UK Government, through various programs such as the Central Delivery Coordination Unit, Ministerial Retreat, and Community of Practice to Secretaries to the State Governments, would continue collaborating with Nigeria. He pledged to consolidate the gains of the existing bilateral relations and make further strides in promoting and stabilizing Nigeria’s democracy.
The Nigerian government’s objective is to forge a deeper and more fruitful relationship with the British government, leveraging historical ties for the progress and development of Nigeria. With mutual cooperation and support, both countries can pave the way for robust collaborations in various sectors for the betterment of their citizens.
