The gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the recent general elections in Ogun State, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has made a heartfelt appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led federal government to consider approving a N200,000 minimum wage for workers across the country.

Oguntoyinbo emphasized the urgency of this plea in light of the current economic reality, which has resulted in rising prices of goods and services nationwide.

In a statement issued on Saturday and made available to Media Talk Africa, Oguntoyinbo expressed his concerns and hopes for a positive response.

It is worth noting that the labour unions had proposed N200,000 as the minimum wage during their interaction with the President.

Taking this into consideration, Oguntoyinbo appealed to Tinubu to give his approval and support to this request.

The NNPP candidate, in his statement, lamented the alarming rate of poverty in the country, with approximately 120 million citizens struggling as low-income earners.

According to Oguntoyinbo, the most effective solution to alleviate the hardship faced by workers is granting their demand for a N200,000 minimum wage.

He further justified his appeal by citing the prevailing economic circumstances in the country.

Oguntoyinbo concluded his statement by urging Tinubu and other governors to carefully consider and approve the workers’ request.

“President Tinubu and the governors must reflect on the current realities in the country and find ways to uplift workers’ monthly income to match the current market prices of essential commodities and utilities,” he stated.

He further emphasized the role of elected leaders in making a positive impact on the lives of the people and creating an enabling environment for all Nigerians, regardless of their income level, to enjoy a comfortable life.

“I take this opportunity to appeal to our President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the 36 state governors to prioritize the welfare of workers and ordinary citizens by adhering to the N200,000 minimum wage, rather than increasing their own remuneration,” Oguntoyinbo concluded.
