Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District, has emphasized that the Igbo people are an integral part of Nigeria and have the right to live and conduct their businesses in any part of the country. Speaking at the 2023 Umunri Cultural Fiesta, a gathering of various communities in Anambra State, Umeh vowed that the Igbo would resist any form of xenophobic attacks, emphasizing that they are not migrants but indigenous people of Nigeria.
During his address, Umeh highlighted the peaceful nature of the Igbo people and their commitment to promoting national integration and inter-tribal relationships. He stressed that the Igbo, known for their hard work and resourcefulness, should not be subjected to attacks and discrimination.
Umeh’s remarks were prompted by recent rumors suggesting that Igbo residents might be forced to leave Lagos State. He urged Lagos residents to respect the rights of the Igbo to conduct their business activities, reminding them that the Igbo contribute significantly to the development of any community they reside in.
Contrary to misconceptions, Umeh clarified that the Igbo are not newcomers or migrants in Nigeria. They are the aborigines of the country, deeply rooted in its history and culture. As such, they have every right to live, work, and thrive in any part of Nigeria.
“Igbo people live everywhere in Nigeria. There is no village in Nigeria where the Igbo people don’t reside and carry out their businesses,” stated Umeh. “They pay their taxes to the Lagos State Government and should be allowed to continue their entrepreneurial activities without any hindrance.”
The Senator concluded by warning that any attack on the Igbo is an attack on the unity and stability of Nigeria as a whole. He urged all Nigerians to embrace the diversity within the country and work towards building a prosperous nation that values and respects all ethnic groups.
