Gov Otu Calls for Accountability Following Tragic Boat Incident

In the wake of a devastating boat tragedy that resulted in the loss of three lives, Governor Bassey Otu has taken decisive action by summoning cruise boat operators, the management of Marina Resort, and the Cross River State Tourism Bureau (CRSTB) to his office. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, involved a group of medical students who were part of the Nigerian Medical Student Association (NIMSA).

Fortunately, a combined effort from local residents, Nigerian police, and Navy divers led to the rescue of eleven students. However, even after 24 hours, the bodies of three victims remain unrecovered.

In an official statement released by Emmanuel Ogbeche, the chief press secretary to Governor Bassey Otu, it was announced that all activities at Marina Resort, the operators of the ill-fated cruise boat, will be suspended indefinitely. This decision is aimed at ensuring a thorough investigation is carried out to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The statement further stated, “The cruise boat operators, along with the management of the State Tourism Bureau, are directed to attend a meeting in the office of the Secretary to the State Government on Tuesday.”

Governor Otu’s commitment to the safety of his constituents is evident in his directive to the state Ministry of Transport to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the safety standards and conditions of all boats operating in the Calabar waterways. This proactive measure will ascertain whether the incident was a result of negligence or a broader issue within the industry.

As investigations progress, it is imperative that those responsible for this tragedy are held accountable. The families of the victims deserve justice, and the determination of Governor Bassey Otu to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors to Cross River State is commendable.
