Eid-el Kabir: Nigerian Government Declares Wednesday, Thursday Public Holidays

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Wednesday, June 28th and Thursday, June 29th, 2023 as public holidays in celebration of Eid-El-Kabir. This announcement was made by Oluwatoyin Akinlade, a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior.

In a statement released by the Ministry, it was stated, “The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 28th and Thursday, June 29th, 2023 as Public Holidays in commemoration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration and heartily felicitates with the Muslim Ummah at home and in the diaspora.”

The essence of Eid-El-Kabir, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God. It is celebrated by Muslims worldwide with prayers, feasting, and acts of charity.

The Ministry of Interior urged all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious affiliations, to embrace the spirit of sacrifice and contribute to the growth and development of their communities and the nation as a whole. This call for sacrifice extends beyond the symbolic slaughtering of animals and includes selflessness and service to others.

Furthermore, the permanent secretary expressed optimism that the prayers and sacrifices made during this auspicious occasion would contribute to the much-needed peace and unity in Nigeria. With the current challenges facing the nation, it is hoped that the message of Eid-el-Kabir will inspire collective harmony and progress.

As the public holidays are observed across the country, it is a time for families and loved ones to come together and celebrate. Muslims will gather in mosques for special prayers, followed by communal feasts and exchanging of gifts. The occasion is also an opportunity to extend a hand of friendship and compassion to those less fortunate.

The declaration of these public holidays for Eid-El-Kabir showcases the Nigerian government’s commitment to respecting religious diversity and fostering unity among its citizens. It is a time for reflection, devotion, and renewing the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.

May this festive season bring about peace, understanding, and progress for Nigeria as we celebrate Eid-El-Kabir.
