In a commendable display of their capacity to respond to maritime emergencies, the Nigerian Navy has earned applause from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State. The quick response by the Navy resulted in the rescue of 11 out of the 14 medical students who tragically drowned in the Calabar waterways last Saturday.
A delegation from NEMA, led by Mr Fortunatus Anyanwu, visited the NNS Victory headquarters in Calabar to express their appreciation. The Director General of NEMA, who was represented by the delegation, expressed confidence in the Navy’s ability to handle search and rescue operations in the maritime environment.
The NEMA delegation commended the Navy for their heroic act and highlighted their crucial role in previous disaster management efforts, including the rescue operations, transportation of relief materials, and distribution of palliative items to flood victims in 2022.
Recognizing the effectiveness of Navy Units in disaster response management, the NEMA delegation emphasized their ongoing reliance on the Navy in future disaster management endeavors. They referred to the Navy as a dependable ally in maritime emergencies within Nigeria.
The Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu, also expressed his gratitude to the Navy, local divers, and the police for their swift response, which led to the rescue of the 11 survivors. This commendation highlights the pride that the nation feels for those involved in the successful rescue operation.
Commander of NNS Victory, Commodore Vincent Gbaranwi, expressed his appreciation to the NEMA team for their visit. He assured them that providing safety and security to lives and properties in the country’s maritime ways remains a top priority for the Navy.
Commodore Gbaranwi reiterated that “search and rescue” is one of the Navy’s statutory mandates and a major component of the Chief of the Naval Staff’s Strategic Directives. He commended the men who were involved in the rescue efforts and urged seafarers to adhere to basic maritime safety requirements to prevent similar distress situations in the future.
This incident serves as a strong reminder of the importance of a well-equipped and responsive Navy in ensuring the safety of individuals in maritime emergencies. The Nigerian Navy’s swift action in this boat mishap is a testament to their dedication and professionalism.
