FCTA Declares Trademore Estate a Disaster Zone Following Devastating Flooding

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has declared the Trademore Estate area a disaster zone, urging immediate action to prevent further loss of life and property.

Following recent torrential downpours that led to the flooding of over 116 houses in the Lugbe District of Abuja, the FCTA called for urgent measures to address the situation.

The declaration was made by the Permanent Secretary of the FCTA, Olusade Adesola, during an assessment tour of the affected area. Adesola, along with senior officials of the FCTA and heads of security and paramilitary agencies, visited Trademore Estate to evaluate the damages caused by the flooding.

Expressing surprise at the number of residents who returned to the affected areas shortly after the flooding, Adesola emphasized the need for immediate action. The FCTA, in collaboration with the Flood Mitigation Taskforce headed by the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and supported by officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Development Control, and Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), is now poised to find solutions to the issue at hand.

Adesola stated, “We just visited Trademore to see the developmental challenges caused by the inadequate drainage system in the area. We have recognized the need to address this urgently.”

The severity of the flooding experienced in Trademore Estate astonished the officials. Hence, the taskforce immediately mobilized to provide recommendations and attention to the area. Additionally, plans for the relocation of affected residents are being discussed.

With rain predictions indicating the likelihood of more heavy rainfall for the remainder of the year, the FCTA is committed to mitigating future occurrences and ensuring the safety of those residing in flood-prone areas.

The declaration of Trademore Estate as a disaster zone by the FCTA underscores the need for swift action to prevent further devastation caused by flooding. The combined efforts of various agencies will undoubtedly contribute to the long-term solution of this recurring issue, offering hope to the affected residents.
