The students of Mater Amabilis Secondary School, Umuoji, in Idemili north local government area of Anambra State, have emerged as the winners of the 2023 National Entrepreneurship Exhibition and Awards. Their victory has earned them the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the SAGE World Cup in Italy. Outperforming around 20 top schools from across the country, the students showcased their innovative projects, demonstrating creativity and entrepreneurial skills.
The annual tournament, organized by the Nigerian segment of the Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE), aims to foster the development of entrepreneurial leaders who can address the needs of their communities and contribute to the global economy. Taking place at the Area Council Service Commission House in Garki Abuja from June 25th to 28th, the event offered a platform for students to learn from each other, share experiences, and connect with like-minded individuals.
Mater Amabilis Secondary School impressed the judges with their hydro-electric device that converts saltwater into electricity and their multi-purpose agro machine. These groundbreaking projects caught the attention of the judges, securing the school the overall first position. The second and third positions were awarded to University of Calabar Demonstration Secondary School and Government Technical College Garki, Abuja, respectively.
In addition to their victory, the Mater Amabilis students were bestowed with a 100% scholarship to study at Cyprus International University. Furthermore, Mr. Joshua Ekeh, the Chief Coach of Mater Amabilis, Umuoji, was honored with the National Best Mentor of the Year award.
Rev. Fr. Francis Onwuchulum, the Manager of Mater Amabilis Secondary School, expressed his congratulations to the students for their exceptional performance. He attributed their success to the high standard of academic excellence and discipline exemplified by the school. Fr. Francis commended the coaches, Mr. Joshua Ekeh and Miss Grace Amamudi, for their dedication and contributions to the students’ achievements. He encouraged the award-winning students to remain focused and strive for more significant accomplishments.
The sub-category awards were awarded to Attarbiyya Stem School, Abuja (Best Innovation Business Project), Hendon College, Abuja (Best Innovation Project), Federal Government College, Vandeikya, Benue State (Best Social Enterprise Business Project), St. John Vianney Science School, Igbariam, Anambra State (Best Environmentally Sustainable Project), Start-rite Schools, Abuja (Best Impact Driven Project), The Bells Comprehensive Secondary School, Ota, Ogun State (Best Market Viable Project), Marist Bicentenary College, Ngor-okpala, Imo State (Community Service Award), and Regina Pacis Model Secondary School, Onitsha, Anambra State (Best Sustainable Health Impact Project).
