Maverick singer, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has issued a challenge to Nigerian youths to rise against the system that has failed them. In a tweet, he shared a video of protesters setting fire to buildings in France.
Expressing his frustration, Charly Boy stated, “This isn’t Syria, Iraq, or Afghanistan. This is France, where 9% of the population has brought down entire cities! I am waiting on the exceptional Nigerian youths to reject a system that has let them down. The destiny of Nigeria rests in your hands.”
France has been engulfed in a wave of protests following the shooting of a 17-year-old by the police near Paris on Tuesday. The demonstrations have led to the imposition of a ban on protests in certain cities and travel advisories for citizens.
Videos and images have emerged, depicting scenes of burning vehicles and individuals scaling buildings with shattered windows. The clashes between riot police officers and demonstrators have been intense.
In response to the unrest, French President Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency meeting with his ministers in an attempt to bridge the divisions and unite the country during his second term.
Charly Boy’s call to action comes as he appeals to the Nigerian youth to channel their frustrations into creating positive change rather than resorting to violence. He believes that the destiny of Africa lies in the hands of its young people, as they possess the power to reject the failings of the system and shape a better future.
