The Anambra State government has expressed its dismay over a continuous onslaught of unprovoked social media attacks aimed at tarnishing the image of the state. Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Don Onyenji, shared the government’s position at a press briefing held in Awka on Saturday.
Onyenji argued that resorting to social media platforms to express grievances against the government was tantamount to degrading the state’s reputation and deterring potential investors. He urged individuals, especially journalists, with concerns or complaints about the government to utilize conventional media channels, admonishing them to take additional steps to solicit responses from the relevant ministries, departments, or agencies.
The Commissioner acknowledged that the tourism and hospitality sector in the state was making progress, but he lamented that the negative narrative being propagated about Anambra was impeding the government’s efforts.
He stated, “It is unfair for our people, especially those in the entertainment industry, to utilize social media platforms to berate the government for perceived shortcomings. They should employ their mediums and engage in responsible criticism.”
However, Onyenji made it clear that the government welcomed constructive criticism and would always provide responses and take responsibility whenever necessary.
