The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a stern ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu, demanding that he disclose the details of the savings from the removal of fuel subsidy within 14 days.

SERAP has threatened legal action against Tinubu if he fails to comply with their request to publish the spending specifics of the N400 billion saved in four weeks since the abolishment of the fuel subsidy on petrol.

In a tweet from its official Twitter account on Sunday, SERAP stated, “BREAKING: Subsidy removal: We’ve urged President Tinubu to widely publish spending details of the N400 billion saved in four weeks from the removal of subsidy on petrol, or face legal action.”

During his inauguration on May 29, Tinubu officially announced the end of the fuel subsidy regime. He committed to redirecting the funds previously allocated to fuel subsidy towards improving infrastructure in critical sectors such as education and healthcare.

SERAP, a non-governmental organization that focuses on promoting transparency and accountability, is known for taking legal action to ensure compliance with anti-corruption and good governance principles in Nigeria.

By giving Tinubu a 14-day ultimatum, SERAP aims to ensure that the promised savings are properly accounted for and used for the benefit of the Nigerian people, in line with Tinubu’s public commitment.

If President Tinubu fails to comply with the ultimatum, it remains to be seen whether SERAP will follow through on its threat to take legal action. This development highlights the growing demand for transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s governance and the need for leaders to uphold their promises to the people.
