Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has been advised against rushing his return to the country from his medical leave abroad. Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, the representative of the Ondo South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, offered this counsel in a telephone conversation with the governor over the weekend.
In his advice, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim urged Governor Akeredolu to cancel his return flight and take extra time to relax before resuming his official duties. Acknowledging the governor’s 21-day medical leave abroad, which is scheduled to end on July 6, 2023, Senator Ibrahim highlighted the constitutional provision that allows the governor to delegate authority to his deputy in his absence. He also drew attention to the precedent set by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who took a lengthy medical vacation lasting nearly six months.
Emphasizing the need for the governor to recuperate fully, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim said, “Your Excellency, Arakunrin, it is important for you to cancel the date of your return ticket and have a sufficient holiday. You need to rest very well so that you will be adequately fit when you return to duty.
“You’re not a machine, Arakunrin, so you need ample time to rest very well, having been serving the state round the clock for the past seven years.
“The government of Ondo State will continue to run pending your return. So, there’s no need for you to be in a hurry to return.”
This advice from Senator Jimoh Ibrahim reflects a concern for Governor Akeredolu’s well-being and stresses the importance of taking rest after a period of relentless service to the state. By encouraging the governor to prioritize his health and recovery, Senator Ibrahim demonstrates a keen understanding of the demands placed on public officials and the significance of self-care.
As citizens, it is crucial that we recognize and support the well-being of our leaders. This includes giving them the time and space necessary to recharge so they can resume their duties rejuvenated and in optimal health. Governor Akeredolu’s case serves as a reminder that leaders, like anyone else, need time for rest and recovery in order to continue serving the people effectively.
By heeding Senator Ibrahim’s advice and taking a deserved rest, Governor Akeredolu demonstrates a commitment to his own well-being and sets an example for others in positions of authority. We join Senator Ibrahim in wishing the governor a speedy recovery and look forward to his return, refreshed and ready to continue his service to the people of Ondo State.
