The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has joined forces with the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) to provide training for 200 personnel of the service on Tax Audit and Investigation.

In his address to the participants, Mr. Haruna Abdullahi, the Acting Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, emphasized the importance of capacity building and affirmed the service’s commitment to upholding it as a core objective. He noted that this training comes at an opportune time, as efforts are underway to harmonize and centralize revenue collection for the FCT-IRS. Therefore, a skilled and equipped workforce is needed to drive this process effectively.

This collaboration marks the second phase of training, with an additional 200 personnel being trained this year, bringing the total to 400 trained staff so far. Abdullahi stressed that under his leadership, the service will continue to partner with relevant professional bodies both within and outside the country to enhance the productivity of the workforce.

Abdullahi further explained that tax officials require both technical and verbal skills to conduct effective audits and interact with taxpayers, particularly high net worth individuals and politically exposed persons. By improving compliance, the FCT-IRS aims to bolster revenue generation, making the role of the service crucial to the success of the FCT Administration.

During the training, participants are expected to listen attentively and actively participate in order to make meaningful contributions and add value to the work of the service. The Director of Human Capital Management and Development, Mr. Umar Mohammed Jada, affirmed the service’s commitment to collaborating with professional bodies such as CITN to build the capacity of its personnel. He highlighted that the FCT-IRS prioritizes training and retraining of staff to continuously improve service delivery and achieve the set goals and objectives of the service.

The training program focuses on two key areas: Tax Intelligence and Information Gathering, as well as Tax Audit and Investigation.

This collaborative training initiative demonstrates the FCT-IRS’s dedication to professional development and its pursuit of excellence in revenue collection and service delivery. Through equipping their personnel with the necessary skills, the FCT-IRS aims to effectively fulfill their mandate while contributing to the overall growth and success of the FCT Administration.
