Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, commended the Arab approach to resolving the Syrian crisis as “serious” and emphasized the importance of taking practical steps towards ending the protracted conflict. Safadi made these remarks during a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Mekdad, while on his official visit to Syria.

The purpose of Safadi’s visit was to discuss the Jordanian initiative aimed at addressing the Syrian crisis. This initiative adopts a step-by-step approach, encompassing humanitarian, military-security, and political concerns to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable resolution.

“This initiative is aligned with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254, enabling us to make concrete progress towards resolving the Syrian crisis,” stated Safadi confidently. He further highlighted that Arab efforts would be coordinated with the international community to develop a unified and comprehensive solution.

Regarding the economic sanctions imposed by Western powers on Syria, Safadi expressed the need to pursue a path that would lead to the lifting of these sanctions and the reinstatement of Syria’s rightful status. He recognized the impact of these sanctions on the Syrian population and emphasized the importance of creating conditions conducive for their alleviation.

The topic of Syrian refugees was also addressed during the press conference. Mekdad shed light on the severe and unprecedented nature of the Western sanctions, attributing them to impeding the return of Syrians to their homes. “The Syrian refugees do not need an invitation card to come home. Rather, they require fundamental necessities in education, health, water supply, and infrastructure to be met,” Mekdad asserted. He further emphasized that the Western sanctions make fulfilling these requirements an arduous task.

The visit and subsequent press conference between the representatives of Jordan and Syria underscore the significance of regional collaborations in tackling the Syrian crisis. As the nations strive to overcome the challenges posed by the conflict, their joint efforts aim to provide hope and eventually restore stability to the war-torn nation. Xinhua/NAN
