In a recent interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show programme, retired Colonel Hassa Stan-Labo, a renowned security expert, discussed the repercussions of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), remaining in detention. Stan-Labo argued that further incarceration would only serve to elevate Kanu’s influence and solidify his hero status.

While addressing the recent visit of the service chiefs to President Bola Tinubu, Stan-Labo urged the government to engage in constructive dialogue with agitating groups, a step that could potentially address the prevailing security issues.

Stan-Labo stated, “One major priority area in the southeast, which I think will greatly diminish grievances, is for us to release Kanu. We need to stop this incarceration. Although Kanu’s actions and statements may have offended the Nigerian state, we must remember that Nigeria is like a family.”

He continued, highlighting the need for a more nuanced approach, “When a family member feels hurt or upset, a responsible father or parent seeks to understand the problem by engaging in dialogue. Can we not initiate conversations with Kanu and IPOB? What about other groups? A diplomatic conversation would go a long way in addressing these issues.”

“Instead of always wielding the stick, let us, at times, bring forth the carrot, employing a combination of diplomacy and negotiation,” suggested Stan-Labo. “I firmly believe that such an approach would significantly ease tensions in the southeast.”

Stan-Labo further emphasized that extended incarceration would only enhance Kanu’s standing and increase his popularity. “Whether we admit it or not, Nnamdi Kanu is now a hero. We have inadvertently made him one. The people of the southeast have championed his cause, and if he were to be released today, he could easily run for governorship in any of the states without any questions raised regarding his origin.”

As the debate surrounding Kanu’s imprisonment continues, Stan-Labo’s perspective provides valuable insight into the potential consequences of long-term incarceration. The Nigerian government now faces the challenge of finding a balanced approach that addresses security concerns while also striving for unity and harmony within the country.
