Reps Seek Funding for Vocational Training in Schools

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Ministry of Education to revise and adequately fund the curriculum for the development and teaching of artisanship and vocational skill in senior secondary schools across the country.

The House also urged the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council to monitor the evaluation and implementation of the trade and entrepreneurship curriculum and also

employ professionals in the various fields of trade and entrepreneurship in secondary schools.

This was a sequel to a motion by a member Awwalu Gwalabe, at plenary.

The lawmaker observed that society in recent times had been plagued with the menace of terrorism, kidnappings,

political thuggery, drug abuse, stealing and early marriages amongst others.

These according to the house are often seen in frustrated unemployed youths and out-of-school children.

Mr Gwalabe said in the past when trade subjects and artisanship were adequately funded and

professionally taught in senior secondary schools, youths hardly indulged in the social vices

because they were trained to be self-reliant and handy with trades and vocational studies.

He expressed concern that the lack of funding for this will set the aforementioned menaces on the increase.

Adopting the motion, the house further urged state governments to also fund the proper teaching of Trade and artisanship in their senior secondary schools.

It also mandated the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services (when constituted) to ensure

implementation.
