Floodings: Kano govt moves to demolish illegal buildings on waterways

The Kano State Government has concluded plans to address the recurring issue of excessive floods experienced annually in the state.

To this end, the government has begun engaging relevant stakeholders and implementing measures to identify houses built on waterways, right-of-ways and under high tension cables for immediate removal.

Speaking in Kano on the occasion of the National Environmental Sanitation Day, Nasiru Sule Garo, the State Commissioner for Environment, said a committee has been set up to review the original master plan of the state to ensure its sustainability.

Garo noted that upon assuming office, the State Environmental Sanitation office had only two dump trucks left, indicating mismanagement of environmental equipment.

He said, “The NNPP government has constituted a committee to recover some stolen items by the Capegate and we are still recovering the equipment; and don’t forget that the issue is before the anti-graft commission in Kano.”

Assuring the public, Nasiru Sule Garo assured that the government is committed to addressing issues such as building on rights of way, drainage systems, and power transmission lines.
