ECOWAS Extraordinary Session Underway

By Timothy Choji, Abuja

An extraordinary meeting of the Authority of Heads of State of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, is about now commencing at the Conference Center of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting would be chaired by Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, who currently heads the regional body.

Presidents and Heads of government of countries with the West African region are attending the meeting.

ECOWAS Chairman, Bola Tinubu, summoned the meeting on Monday, to critically look at steps to take towards restoring democratic governance in Niger Republic.

Niger witnessed a coup on Wednesday, July 26, when presidential guards dethroned the country’s President, Mohammed Bazoum.

ECOWAS responded by imposing sanctions on Niger, insisting that Bazoum must be reinstated, giving a seven day ultimatum, that expired on Sunday, August 6 but the coup plotters have remained adamant.

The whole world now awaits the decisions that will emanate from today’s meeting, hopefully reaching a truce with the coup plotters.
