The Delta State Government has issued a stern warning to traders who continue to conduct business under high tension wires and in waterways, ordering them to relocate immediately.
The state government has expressed its zero tolerance for such lawlessness and has emphasized the need to prioritize safety and adherence to regulations.
The Director-General of Special Duties at the Governor’s Office in Asaba, Frank Omare, delivered this warning during a sensitization tour to traders at Ughelli main market and Otovwodo market along East-West Road, in Ughelli North Council Area.
Omare described the behavior of traders as an act of insubordination towards the state government.
In addition to urging traders to vacate the area under high current wires due to safety concerns, Omare revealed that the council chairman, Hon. Godwin Adode, has allocated a section inside the market for those currently conducting business along the road and walkway to relocate to without delay.
“The Delta State Government, through the council chairman, has designated specific areas for those trading along the walkway and roadside. One is within the provisions market, while the other is located along Olotu Road by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC),” warned Omare.
“We strongly advise everyone trading along the road and walkway to relocate immediately, in order to avoid facing consequences imposed by the state government. We understand that times are hard and businesses may be struggling, but it is imperative that we do the right thing. Delta State aims to beautify Ughelli, just like other cities in the state.”
Omare further announced that the Delta State Government will commence demolitions of structures in flood-prone areas within the council area. He stressed that those who have constructed buildings on natural waterways must remove them and individuals without approved building plans should also take immediate action.
