The Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr Francis Nwifuru, expressed his appreciation for the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for maintaining a balanced approach in their reporting, despite the numerous challenges faced by the state.
Governor Nwifuru conveyed his commendation during a courtesy visit by the union to his office in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State in Southeast Nigeria.
He acknowledged that the current situation in the country, characterized by governance challenges, could have led to biased reactions from journalists. However, he praised the NUJ for its understanding and its contribution to the stability of the socio-political environment in the state. He emphasized that this partnership between the union and the government was testament to a healthy relationship.
The governor said, “Let me sincerely thank you very much for your cooperation and understanding.”
“This is a very challenging period in which you could have written numerous critical articles. But instead, you have chosen to be more constructive and to show us respect like never before.”
“The objective reporting that we receive gives us a lot of encouragement, as it demonstrates that you see yourselves as an integral part of this administration and as great partners in the development of our state.”
“Since assuming office, we have never faced any challenges from the Nigeria Union of Journalists,” he added.
During the visit, the State Chairman of the Union, Samson Nwafor, congratulated Governor Nwifuru on his electoral victory and his assumption of office. Nwafor expressed satisfaction with the governor’s efforts in addressing the significant challenges faced by the state, including employment, youth inclusion in governance, water supply, education, and healthcare.
He said, “Your victory is not only well-deserved, but it affirms the popular choice of the majority of Ebonyi people who strongly believe in equity, fairness, and justice.”
“We are pleased with the steps you’ve taken since assuming office.”
“One of the greatest things you have done, Your Excellency, is to prioritize the youth in your administration,” Nwafor continued.
Nwafor also thanked the governor for revitalizing the health sector through the employment of healthcare professionals and lifting the embargo on civil service employment to fill existing vacancies.
Furthermore, he expressed gratitude for the governor’s initiative to construct low-cost houses for displaced individuals in the state.
The chairman applauded the governor for appointing members of the union to his cabinet and requested additional appointments. He stated, “We want to assure you of our firm resolve to fully support and partner with your administration.”
Nwafor also took the opportunity to present some of the challenges faced by the Union in the state, including the need for a functional vehicle and other logistical support to facilitate their work.
The chairman was accompanied on the visit by members of the State Executive Committee, as well as past State Council chairpersons.
